About our Elders

I was born in Minneapolis, MN and grew up in a loving home as the middle child with 2 brothers and 2 sisters. My mother, Marilyn, was a pastor’s daughter in a Lutheran church setting. It was my grandfather who proved to be a strong spiritual influence in my younger years. Our family moved to southern California in 1972 and after graduating from high school and working in a family-owned business, I was invited to attend a home Bible study. It was here I was told of my sin and of separation from God. The gospel was proclaimed and I came to faith in Jesus Christ. For the next year and a half I faithfully attended Believer’s Chapel in San Clemente, CA, and grew in the grace and knowledge of God’s Word along with a loving body of fellow believers.

In August of 1975, I enrolled in Los Angeles Baptist College and there sensed the Lord’s call to the ministry. Ministry opportunities abounded for me through involvement in the college’s choir, music teams, camp teams, and prison-outreach teams.

Never to be forgotten, I caught sight of a beautiful and talented piano/music student named Noreen Oda. We struck up a close friendship, eventually became a ‘couple’, then engaged in 1978, and married a year later in Santa Clarita, CA. I graduated from LABC in 1979 with a degree in Bible-Theology followed by Noreen’s graduation in 1980 with a degree in Music. The Lord then provided a position on ministry staff at Bethel Baptist Church in Lancaster, CA. allowing me to serve in various pastoral capacities for 14 years.

It was in 1995 that the Lord opened the door for me to join the staff and begin serving at Parkside Bible Fellowship. I was involved in all aspects of ministry for the first 8 years (especially music and youth), and now am handling the preaching/teaching duties. The Lord has blessed Noreen and me with 4 wonderful children: Sam, Heidi (husband Brady), Kari (husband Brett), and Sara.

I enjoy time with my family, all sorts of music, walking, golf, tennis, and most sports. I especially enjoy soccer and volunteering time to help with local soccer programs.

Noreen and I thank the Lord for bringing us here and for the privilege of serving Him at Parkside. I realize I could not do this without His strength and help and I am very grateful to Him for the loving and joyful support of my wonderful wife. I join in echoing the words of the Apostle Paul in saying,

‘I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus’ (Phil. 1:6). Let’s continue to trust Him and to proclaim His gospel, His goodness and His glory to a watching community. To God be the glory!

In 1992, toward the end of my senior year at Churchill County High School, I heard the Good News of Jesus Christ from a friend and trusted Christ for salvation. From that first moment, the Lord was working to change my life forever. Great teaching and preaching from the Bible along with faithful mentoring by godly men played a part in my desire to serve the Lord in ministry.

In 1993 I met my wife, Stephanie, while attending His Hill Bible School in Texas. I then moved on to the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago where I finished in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in Bible and Theology. In 2004 I completed a Master of Arts in Biblical Exegesis at Wheaton College.

In 1996, Stephanie and I served for one year as short-term missionaries in Russia with the Navigators as a part of the CoMission. In 2007, we returned to Russia to serve for three more years before moving back to Fallon in 2010.

I am very honored to serve here at Parkside. My areas of responsibility include student ministries and young families. My vision is to see students and young families become grounded, faithful and fruitful in their Christian walk through the faithful preaching and teaching of God’s Word and genuine, Christ-centered fellowship with God’s children.

I appreciate a wide variety of books and literature, like to tinker with languages, and have recently gotten more involved in coaching CrossFit.

Stephanie and I have five wonderful children: Brianna, Megan, Sophia, Gabriel and Eva Clare.

About our Deacons

I am a third generation native Nevadan. I grew up in Sparks, Nevada as the older of two adopted and much loved children. I started attending church regularly as a teenager. I heard the gospel at Emmanuel First Baptist Church in Sparks, which I attended with my future bride, Amy Genkinger. I attended regularly with Amy and her family and, after having countless seeds planted, came to faith in Christ on Christmas Day, 1983.

We attended Emmanuel First Baptist Church faithfully and I learned to serve the Lord, mostly from Amy and her parents, there until 1990. We were very involved; she in choir and missionary support and I on the board of managers. I deeply appreciate Pastor Ray Murray and the board for their patience and all they taught me as a young Christian. We moved to Fallon in 1990. After trying other churches in Fallon, we came to Parkside in 1995. My understanding of the true saving grace of Jesus Christ really started sinking in after being discipled by Pastor Bob Burrows, Pastor John Dunkin and most recently with Pastor Woody Swenson. I am eternally grateful to these men for their time and energy in ministering to me personally.

I graduated from UNR in 1986 as a Chemical Engineer and have been active in the geothermal power industry in the Western US for the past 26 years. I have also been a Nevada EMT-1 since 1988 and enjoy being the volunteer medic for the Fallon Greenwave. We were called to be a deacon family at PBF in 1999 and have served in social activities, building maintenance, and my favorite, the grounds and gardens. I am very appreciative of the elder board and fellow deacons for their encouragement, support and tolerance of my chattiness! I am blessed to be part of the Sunday service, using my highly extroverted personality as the greeting and announcement person. It is a joy to be able to share and encourage the body through this area of ministry.

Amy and I met at Sparks High School where we started dating in our senior year, then we attended the University of Nevada, Reno. We were married at Emmanuel First Baptist Church in 1984. God has blessed us with two wonderful sons, Brett (21) and Josh (17). Brett is attending college in Reno after growing up at Parkside and he now serves at Living Stones. He takes that servant spirit to a new body and we are very proud of him. Josh is a passionate young man for both academics and athletics and Amy and I enjoy following him around northern Nevada in his sporting endeavors. Amy and I both greatly enjoy gardening and yard work, with the ultimate goal of being able to share our home and entertain those we have grown so close to in Fallon.

I was born and raised right here in Fallon. I met my wife Carole when we were both in the 5th grade. Although Carole was saved at a very young age, neither of us was raised “in church”. By God’s grace, He gave me the gift of faith allowing me to become a believer in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus as the only way of salvation and forgiveness of sins. My new life in Christ began during my senior year of high school in 1978. Carole and I were married in 1979 in what was then First Baptist Church. We were members of First Baptist where I served as a Trustee until the church merged with Grace Christian Fellowship to become Parkside Bible Fellowship. I have had the honor of serving as a deacon at Parkside for many years, specifically in the areas of overseeing the sound room (audio and visual) and sharing with the other deacons overseeing the maintenance of the physical church buildings.

Carole and I thank God for our children David, Sarah and son-in-law Donny, all of whom seek to live for and serve our Lord Jesus Christ. In accordance to 3 John 4, “We have no greater joy than this, to know that our children walk in the truth.”

One of my favorite Bible verses is Romans 10:9: “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

I grew up in Sparks, Nevada and graduated from Reed High; having no formal church upbringing. I was baptized into the Mormon Church in 1976 and attempted to live the Mormon way for a time. By 1978, I was rejecting anything to do with God and was determined to live for myself and sought pleasure from the things of the world. I studied at the University of Nevada - Reno where I obtained a BS degree in Business with an emphasis in accounting and operations management.

More importantly, while I was a Resident Assistant in Juniper Hall, I attended a Bible Study and heard the Gospel from many Christian believers both in the dorm and on campus. Members of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship were instrumental in sharing God's true Word from the Bible. By God's Grace, in May of 1981 I attended a retreat called the "Open Encounter" hosted by the Catholic Church in Carson City where the Holy Spirit prompted me to surrender myself to Christ once and forever. My life change was noticed by family and friends as I surrendered my old ways and realized the truth that "all things have become new" (2 Cor. 5:17). In August of 1982, I was baptized in Little Washoe Lake by the Elders of Reno Christian Fellowship. In 1983, I married my college sweetheart, Gail Hellwinkel, of Gardnerville, Nevada, and we moved to Fallon.

In 1985, Gail and I began attending First Baptist Church, which merged with Grace Church in 1989, to form Parkside Bible Fellowship. Shortly after, my wife and I were trained as certified instructors in the Larry Burkett (now Crown Ministries) financial concepts. I also served on the local Child Evangelism Fellowship Board of Directors as Treasurer for several years until 1992, when I was approached by the Elders of Parkside Bible Fellowship to serve as Deacon of Finances and lead the Church Finance team.

My wife and I have four daughters: Sarah (husband Eric), Becca, Pamela, and Virginia. We also served as AWANA leaders in the early 1990's during our daughters' childhood years. In addition to my current duties as Deacon of Finances, I have been leading a mid-week home Bible Study (flock) since 2003 and participate in individual discipleship/Christian mentoring.

I am also an Eagle Scout and serve as Troop Chaplain for Troop 1776, sponsored by Parkside Bible Fellowship, where I lead the "God and Church" Bible Study program for young scouts who want to know more about Jesus Christ.

My favorite hobbies include hunting, fishing, reading, and spending time with my family. I am eager to share the faith God has given me, whether in season or out of season (2 Tim 4:2).
